When you’re taught to love everyone, to love your enemies, then what value does that place on love?
Marilyn Manson (via affremblequotes) - when you only love those who love you, what value does that place on love? anyone can love someone who loves them back. that simply makes love a commodity, a currency, a tool, a means to an end. the difficult choice is loving one who doesn’t love you, rising above the enmity, choosing love as the greatest catalyst for some otherwise irrational behavior. loving your enemy says, “i am acting with your best interest in mind regardless of how you feel about me & i expect no reciprocation whatsoever.” loving your enemies says nothing remarkable about love itself other than its unique call to do wholly more than is required or deserved: “It is only when he is a burden that another person is really a brother and not merely an object to be manipulated.” - dietrich bonhoeffer (via hilker)
Good word, hilker.
